It's officially the hustle and bustle of the holidays! And, if you're like me, you have a big list of things you want to do to mark the holiday season, but there's just not enough time in the day — this year, especially since Thanksgiving came so late!
Our family likes a good tradition and a good celebration. There are so many good and funny memories. One Christmas memory that stands out for me was the dreaded ice storm Christmas. I think it was about ten years ago. For many years, we'd drive down to Red Wing, Minnesota, where my sister, brother-in-law, and family would host the Christmas day festivities.
That particular year, there was a warning of some snow, then some ice, then some sleet, and more ice, but we hoped the meteorologists were just hyping the weather up. Unfortunately, that was not the case. I recall heading out on Christmas morning to give our dog, Roberto de Medici, a walk. We got about half a block away and decided to turn around. Even with our rugged cleats, it was too icy. If we couldn't walk around the block, we definitely couldn't make the hour-long drive.
We decided to stay put and celebrate at home. I remember the four of us cuddling on the sofa and watching the movie Alien. I don't know why we picked that movie. Maybe we were tired of holiday movies by then.
We played "Stump the Chef" with our leftovers and made risotto for dinner. It wasn’t great. Let’s just say Gordon Ramsay would have spit it out. Later that night, the boys discovered that Soho Cafe (our neighborhood's little counter-serve Italian joint) was open. They ventured out and brought home a feast.
It wasn’t a typical Christmas but it sure was memorable.
What about you? What is one of your favorite holiday memories?
Ha! I remember that year too! If I remember correctly, I think my family got Chinese food and played board games that Christmas :)
I also have really strong and fond memories of the family talent show every Christmas. That was always so much fun and one of the highlights of the day for me. It really fostered my love for music at a young age to see all of my family members playing music together <3
I remember one of those Xmas's in Red Wing so well! It was when everyone was young enough that all the cousins and aunts/uncles stayed the night. Jackson and Leo had these suitcases that doubled as little cars and we would push each other down the hallways, racing to the basement door. I think the wood floor was terribly scratched but none of the adults seemed too concerned. Then all the cousins got our PJs on, played ping pong in the basement, and watched Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
