Ha! I remember that year too! If I remember correctly, I think my family got Chinese food and played board games that Christmas :)
I also have really strong and fond memories of the family talent show every Christmas. That was always so much fun and one of the highlights of the day for me. It really fostered my love for music at a young age to see all of my family members playing music together <3
I remember one of those Xmas's in Red Wing so well! It was when everyone was young enough that all the cousins and aunts/uncles stayed the night. Jackson and Leo had these suitcases that doubled as little cars and we would push each other down the hallways, racing to the basement door. I think the wood floor was terribly scratched but none of the adults seemed too concerned. Then all the cousins got our PJs on, played ping pong in the basement, and watched Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
My favorite memory is more of a tradition- but if it’s all the Yule we had it would be enough for me. My husband and I never brought Santa into our kids lives, instead we celebrated St. Nick Day which is December 6. We would put our money into a pot- our kids would put their bit and we adults would put our bigger bit into a pot, we would pick a family to help, and buy gifts for that family and drop them off anonymously. Once this was done we would have a little hors d’oeuvre feast at our home and open our stockings filled with practical or homemade gifts.
We still do a version of this with our now grown kids, but they do their own giving. This will forever be my favorite thing.
