This coming Sunday is Mother's Day. It's a complicated holiday. Some people want to be mamas but aren't; some no longer have mamas and miss them desperately; some choose not to be mamas but may feel societal pressures and judgment. Sounds like a shit show.
For many years after my mom died, I didn't feel much like celebrating, and honestly, I just wanted the day to be over. Social media made it worse. It seemed like all the moms everywhere were getting breakfasts in bed, love notes from their children, or both. (It's not like my family didn’t try to make it special, but I’m sure I was tough to please and be around that day.)
Over the last few years, things have changed. The cloud has lifted, and I no longer feel sad on Mother's Day. I also stay off social media. :) Instead, I am grateful for my mother's love and all she taught me.Â
My mom taught me so many beautiful things. It's tough to narrow down just a few. Here are some things I've been thinking about lately:
Expressing love and seeing the best in people.
A love for classical music! She'd regularly wake me up and tell me there was “a beautiful oboe concerto on the radio, and you should listen to it."
Growing good, healthy food and making delicious dinners from scratch!
As we celebrate mamas, let's consider this question. What's one of the best things you learned from your mama?
I love hearing about Grandma Cherril <3 I am lucky enough to have a WONDERFUL mama. There are so many things that she has taught me. Here's just a few :)
1) The importance of a good home cooked meal and time spent with family
2) Love of classical music (same, Lisa!). I still remember hearing Classical 99.5FM blasting through the house at 6AM. "Happy, happy feast" was always played Friday mornings and my brother and I would beg mom to turn it down. Now I don't go a day without listening to classical radio :)
3) Be the bigger person, empathize with others and forgive often
4) How to build a beautiful home - through decorating, finding unique vintage pieces, and incorporating fresh flowers. I pull so much of my design inspiration from my mom!
5) The importance of giving back to your community and helping others who are less fortuante
Love ya, Mom!!!
Lisa- I just read your comments and they made me cry. xoxo
